Firecracker 50 - Top 5 For Hard Charging Mccann
Author : RHR
Saturday night saw the running of the Firecracker 50 at Northam Speedway for the Pro Dirt Late Models.
For the first time this season Veronica was cleared to start in the field after spending the first two rounds Rear of Field (ROF). Heat one for the night, and Veronica started out of position four and quickly advance up into position two before a spin with one lap to go saw the 01 Rayburn re-grid at the tail of the field for a green, white, checker situation.
“The spin was completely my own fault. Being only my third meeting in these cars I am still learning how they react in different situations. They’re completely different to anything that I’ve been in before – I am used to light-weight cars with plenty of aerodynamics. These Late Model have plenty of horsepower but are big and heavy cars.”
Heat two rolled out and McCann started out of position five and after plenty of action within the mid-pack Veronica was able to use a well set-up car to make several passes as she advanced and crossed the checkers in second position.
“I was certainly frustrated with my error in the first heat and knew I had to come up with something so that I had some sort of decent starting position in the final.”
After adding up all the points from the qualifying heats, Veronica had placed the Rayburn in grid position seven for the 50 lap final. When the green flag fell it saw a freight train of cars move to the bottom of the track. Brad Blake was the early leader and was able to pull away by a couple of car lengths from the next pack of cars which included Veronica. Toward the end of the final, McCann had moved up into fifth place close behind Pro Dirt Late Model guns Vosbergen, Ludlow and Oldfield and with one lap to go Veronica made an impressive dash up the inside of Oldfield but it wasn’t enough as she crossed in a close fifth and walked away with the BCM Motorsports Hard Charger award.
“This was the longest race that I had done on dirt so I was nursing the tyres in the first half of the race and I was still up there with the leaders so I knew I had something to work with in the last part of the 50 laps. I am definitely happy with fifth at this stage; I did all the things I needed to do tonight. I moved forward, the car is in one piece and I learnt a lot about these Late Models.”
