Farrell Dominates Wa Championship Showdown
Author : Ken Brown
Ryan Farrell burnt up the Bunbury City Speedway circuit on Saturday February 16 to score a brilliant fourth WA Sprintcar Championship in a row.
The 46th running of the coveted event saw Farrell untroubled to lead all the way over Mark Wells, American Chad Blonde, Kris Coyle and Jamie Maiolo - who started out of position 19 in the field after coming through the B Main.
To put things in perspective - no other driver has ever reeled off three successive victories in the state title - let alone FOUR on the trot!!
And now Farrell has a total of five WA crowns alongside his name - only one behind the legndary "Mr Sprintcar" Alf Barbagallo.
Twenty-eight cars ran against the clock with Farrell notching a sizzling 13.79 second circulation to beat Wells (13.90), Ben Ellement (13.96) and Luch Monte (13.99).
Kalgoorlie's Scott Milling was never headed during heat 1 with Farrell taking second spot off Shaun Bradford - however later Farrell was relegated two spots for having more than two wheels over the inner kerb.
Marshall McDiarmid showed the way in heat 2 until a couple of cars spun on turn 2.
Coming up to them McDiarmid looped to avoid them and was sent to the rear.
Jamie Moon went on to win the event over Queenslander Bryan Mann and Wells.
David Priolo cleared out from Chad Blonde and Mick Goode in the third heat.
McDiarmid was never headed during heat 4, with the minor placings going to Mann and Goode.
Moon scored his second straight heat success in the fifth preliminary by keeping out in front of Ian Woodes and Luch Monte.
Milling also became a double winner by annexing the sixth event over Jason Kendrick and David Priolo.
The A Dash went to Farrell over Monte and Mann.
Wells went flag to flag in the B Dash to defeat brothers Ben and David Ellement.
The B Main saw Greg Hall and youngster Kendrick both slam into the wall in separate incidents.
Goode scored the win over Pino Priolo (back for a skid after several years on the drag strip), Maiolo, Woods and Allan Nash.
At the green in the A Main it was Farrell over Wells and Ben Ellement.
Blonde slipped by David Ellement for fourth spot.
Then on lap 14 several cars came together on Pits Bend.
Monte and Kent Roberts were sidelined with David Priolo and David Ellement able to rejoin the race.
Farrell cleared out from Wells and was nearly half a lap in front - and showing brilliant form through the traffic.
With only two laps remaining Pino Priolo brought on the tyellow lights when a rear tyre let go.
Farrell had Wells right on his tailpipe, with a gap back to Blonde (the first US driver to run a place in the WA title), Coyle, Maiolo, Ben Ellement, Bryan Mann, Bradford, David Ellement and Moon.
A great race - and a great result!
Next outing for the AHG Sprintcar Series is next Saturday night (February 23) as a support section for the running of the Australian Speedcar Championship at the Perth Motorplex.
