Wells Is The King
Author :
Ken Brown

Popular Geraldton based driver Mark Wells has downed a top notch field to win the 27th running of the Mike Nanovich/King of Wings annual classic at the Perth Motorplex.

First attempt at a start saw Wells outgun American ace Tim Shaffer with Ryan Farrell a close third.

Then Wade Nygaard tagged the turn 2 wall and flipped the #3 Halls Haulage Maxim.

Underway again in the 30-lapper it was Wells in front of Shaffer, Farrell, Paul McMahan and Max Dumesny.

Then the smoking Dunesbny slowed, taking Robbie Farr onto the inner bike track as he exited the circuit.

The order was now Wells, Shaffer, Farrell, McMahan, Ken Sartori, Steven Lines and Farr.

Shaffer closed up on the race leader Wells, then Farrell dived under the American for second.

David Priolo exited with a blown left rear tyre.

Sartori and then Farr slipped by McMahan in the Krikke Motorsport entry.

With 8 laps to go, Chad Blonde hit the fence around Pits Bend and rolled the Wayne Russell #35 machine.

Wells headed Farrell who had a look under the leader but could not pull it off.

Shaffer got underneath Farrell with two remaining , but McMahan brought on the caution lights when he clipped the fence along the main straight.

It was green – white – checker time with Wells drawing clear of Farrell – who had lost his power steering and the closely following Shaffer.

It had been an epic struggle and a brilliant victory to the veteran Wells – who also was crowned “King” back in 1990 and 1993 at the famed Claremont circuit.
