• Second generation Sedan racer Aaron Barnes heads to Valvoline Raceway this Saturday night for the final round of the Western Sydney Street Stocker Association points battle with a point to prove and a powerful desire to win at the Parramatta venue.

For Barnesy, whose Dad Lindsay raced Super Sedans at the now defunct Newcastle Speedway and Valvoline Raceway in the 1990’s (when it was known as “Parramatta City Raceway”,) the Parramatta circuit remains as one of his favourite for one simple reason.

“It’s where I started racing Junior Sedans,” he proudly recalls, “I watched Dad of course race at Newcastle and Parramatta but it was Sydney where I first got my own taste of action behind the wheel. For that reason, and many others, it’s one of my favourite places.”

Though it’s his first foray on the Parramatta clay this season Barnes lacks nothing in terms of form and race results as he comes into this weekend.

“We’ve had a great season,” he explains, “My highlights so far this season include winning the NSW RSA Street Stocker Title held at Gunnedah Speedway in February, and a close second place finish to John Lodge Jnr in the Australian RSA Street Stocker Title at Nowra Speedway last month. So although we haven’t raced at Valvoline Raceway this season before this Saturday night I still feel good about our chances.”

Typically Street Stock racing at VR is a tight affair with many drivers capable of scoring main event success.

Andrew Espener has a narrow lead in the points championship but there are many potential feature winners that loom in the crosshairs including Wakeman, Sunerton, Davey, Pana, Butt and Dawes to name a few.

John Lodge Jr was resilient in his win the last time the Stockers rocked at VR but serious challengers came from Brendan “Wako” Wakeman (who also recently won the prestigious “Bendy 500” and took promptly housed the 2-metre high winner’s trophy in his favourite Dungog pub), Newcastle Mum racer Kiona Sunerton, Jay Davey, former Commodore Cup racer Denis Pana, hard charging Michael Butt and the versatile “Where’s Wally” themed racer Troy Dawes.

Recently Lodge Jr lined up alongside his sister Kiona Sunerton and the pair raced 1-2 for much of the early part of the feature race – certainly a moment that you’d find hard to duplicate in any form of sport in general, let alone motorsport.

“You can never pick a winner down there (Sydney),” explains Barnes, “it’s a very competitive place and everyone has a chance to win. It’s a challenge that I’m sure everyone looks forward to.”

With another good field of Ford Vs Holden action guaranteed this Saturday night at Valvoline Raceway and the points battle hanging in the balance Aaron Barnes knows that he has his work cut out for him.

As another Barnes once famously sang, “There ain’t no second prize”.
Surely that’s a philosophy that many of the nominated field this weekend will adopt.
