• This weekend the Perth Motorplex will host the Australian 360ci Sprintcar Championship for the first time as 38 drivers contest the 2017 Di Candilo Steel City Australian 360ci Sprintcar Championship. In all it will be the third time that the event has been staged in Western Australia with the title decider previously being held at Kalgoorlie and Bunbury.

The event, to be held between March 17 and 18, will be the 13th edition of the Championship with a total of nine drivers having tasted victory in the Australian Title with Murray Bridge resident Ryan Jones being the only driver to have won the title on more than one occasion (4 times, 2008, 2009, 2011 & 2012).

The two Championships conducted in Western Australia prior to 2017 were in 2007 when Victorian Tony Moule defeated Shaun Bradford and Rob Adley at Kalgoorlie. 2013 saw the Championship return to Western Australia with Robbie Farr claiming the National crown while driving for the Monte Motorsport team. Luke Dillon would finish second driving for the Diamond Bay Motorsport Team while Matthew Reed would complete the podium in the Mat Muir #53.

In the field this weekend there are five drivers who have graced the podium in the past including defending Champion Luke Dillon, 2014 Champ Chad Ely, Shaun Bradford, Daniel Harding and Cameron Gessner.

In addition to his Championship win at Mount Gambier last year Dillon was second at Bunbury in 2013, Ely won at Murray Bridge in 2014, Shaun Bradford was second at Kalgoorlie in 2007 and third in Darwin in 2015, Daniel Harding was second to Ely at Murray Bridge while Cameron Gessner was third last season at Mount Gambier.

So, with only two previous Champions in the 38 driver line up this weekend there is a strong possibility that a new Champion will be crowned at the Perth Motorplex. With the likes of Victorian Jamie Veal, Jason Kendrick, Jason Pryde, Scott Milling, Kaiden Manders, Daniel Keen, Mitch Wormall and Ben Ellement nominated in addition to the previous podium placegetters it should be a great two nights of Sprintcar racing.

Make sure you are at the Motorplex this Friday and Saturday night to witness Australian Sprintcar Championship history.
