• The Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series fires back into life this weekend with round ten to be decided at Kingaroy Speedway on Saturday night (March 18). Presented by Dominator Race Wear and M & N Car Carriers, the event will see 16 cars take to the showground circuit as series leader Mark Pagel fights to protect his position against some of the best in the business. After a blistering start to the season that saw him dominate the opening rounds, Pagel has remained a persistent presence at each event, accumulating points consistently to consolidate his position at the top of the series standings and a win this weekend could put the Gympie-based racer in an almost unassailable position through the final rounds.

Having had a couple of weeks break in preparation for this round, teams will be refreshed and ready to challenge Pagel in pursuit of Australia’s premier speedway sedan series. Included in the star-studded field for this clash are three national championship winners and seven state title winners, plus four previous series champions. Of these, current state titleholder Matt Pascoe and fellow Ipswich-based racer Darren Kane (both of whom have won the Australian Championship on two occasions) bring the best form into the clash and both have enjoyed success at Kingaroy previously. Pascoe is fresh from the Goldrush event at Rushworth in Victoria where he qualified on pole position for the $5000-to-win feature race before being forced out after being contacted by another car in the early moments of the event. Such a disappointment will have Pascoe primed to bounce back with a winning result, while Kane returns after missing the previous round due to other racing commitments interstate. A man who thrives on challenging himself against the best, Kane will relish the opportunity to again take on so many of the most accomplished speedway sedan competitors in the country.

Having not endured a great season by his usual lofty standards, 2010/2011 national champ Steve Jordan returns after a few weeks on the sidelines and be looking to race his way back into victory lane, while Wayne Randall will also be looking to add another win to his extensive list of successes. The Summer Slam Tour earlier this season saw Matt Williams produce his best form since winning the 2009/2010 Queensland Championship and he returns to Kingaroy with every intention of taking the trophy home to Rockhampton, while defending series champion Sean Black and former NSW champ Ian Brims, who sits third in the series standings at the moment, are chasing their first win in a season that has been dominated by Pagel and Pascoe.

Also in the field for the Kingaroy clash are Bob McCosker, Jack Childs, Brendan Doyle, Mark O’Brien, Nicholas O’Keefe and Dempsie Pails, while David Musch and Travis Barron will carry the hopes of the hometown crowd as the only Kingaroy-based drivers in the field.

Each driver will contest three qualifying heats, from which the top six pointscorers will take part in the Penrite Grid Draw to finalise the starting order on the first three rows of the grid for the 40-lap feature race.

In addition to the racing action, race fans will be asked to join drivers and officials honouring popular Super Sedan driver Bill Miller, who lost his battle with cancer last week. Miller spent more than two decades racing Super Sedans around Australia, including at Kingaroy and other Queensland venues, and his familiar pink Pontiac was an iconic fixture at all major events across the country. His dedication to the category, which included contesting more rounds of the National Super Sedan Series than any other driver, produced plenty of career highlights, including a South Australian title win and a third-place finish in the 1999/2000 Australian Championship. Drivers competing this weekend will be invited to fly a pink ribbon in memory of Bill and race fans will be asked to join drivers and officials in a moment of silent reflection to remember one of the sport’s great characters.

Racing gets underway on Saturday night at 5.00pm, with Super Sedan hot laps for round ten of the Think Money Championship Series scheduled for 5.50pm.

2016/2017 Think Money Super Sedan Championship series progressive pointscore (top ten): Mark Pagel 2165, Matt Pascoe 1871, Ian Brims 1674, Wayne Randall 1478, Bob McCosker 1307, David O’Keefe 1276, Tony Brinkmann 1198, Darren Kane 1041, Steve Jordan 1015, Nicholas O’Keefe 898.
