• SYDNEY star Sam Walsh, who will compete in the final round of the Queensland/New South Wales Easter Sprintcar trail at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway Easter Sunday night, says the Northern Rivers venue is one of the most physically demanding tracks in Australia.
“It is probably one of the toughest physical tracks I have ever raced at because you never stop turning. Lismore is a tight place but it races quite fast,” Sam explained.
He acknowledges Lismore is “the smallest track I have ever raced at” but Walsh says he is looking forward to Easter Sunday night at the venue.
The Lismore Showground bull ring provides all the ingredients for a night of spectacular, wheel-to-wheel Sprintcar action as the 410s make their return to the venue. “It will be good and I am looking forward to it,” he added.
Walsh last weekend completed his Sydney commitments for another season. He ran strongly throughout the campaign and recorded three main event wins and was placed third overall in the Ultimate Sprintcar Championship (USC) New South Wales season premiership.
Walsh has contested 28 race meetings since the beginning of his 2016-17 campaign late September.
This season his Rocket Industries team took to the track with a new chassis/engine package straight out of Pennsylvania. They used a chassis produced by the GF1 company that has its US national distribution headquarters at Motor State Distributing Company in Watervliet, Michigan. The 410 motors used in Walsh's engine programme were straight off the production line at Rider Racing Engines, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Lismore takes on extra importance for Walsh as it will be one of the final meetings in Australia before he heads to America in June for an extensive mid-west racing campaign that involves 18 races in 24 days. “I think as far as a driver's progression is concerned, I need it,” he said in relation to his upcoming US stint.
He will concentrate on tracks in the Pennsylvania and Ohio regions.
Thirty-two Sprintcars have nominated for the Lismore round of the east coast Easter trail, which also includes rounds in Toowoomba and Brisbane.
The Lismore show also will feature the running of the NSW Wingless Sprintcar Championship. Race organisers have received upward of 40 entries for the state title.
Gates open at 3PM and racing commences at 6.
