• SECOND generation driver Lachlan McHugh wants to race in America “pretty soon,” but his immediate objective is to remain in contention for honours in the Queensland/NSW Easter Sprintcar Trail entering the final round Easter Sunday night at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway.
The three-race shootout takes in rounds at Toowoomba's Hi-Tec Oils Speedway and Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway, Brisbane.
“I am hoping that after the first two nights I will be in contention for the trail series and can seal the deal with a strong showing at Lismore,” Lachlan, 18, said.
He has never raced a Sprintcar on the tight confines of the Lismore Showground bull ring but has had previous experience in a Mod Lite at the circular venue.
However, whether racing a Sprintcar or a Mod lite, Lachlan has quickly learned the characteristics of the testing Lismore circuit.
“It's all about keeping momentum because the track is virtually a circle and that means keeping up good car speed throughout the whole corner.”
Lachlan, who started racing aged seven in Karts, is not daunted by the prospect of driving a high-horsepower 410 V8 Sprintcar in such tight quarters of the Lismore boundaries and is taking a very relaxed approach to the challenge he faces.
“It should be a lot of fun,” he quipped.
Young gun McHugh is already eyeing off a stint in America well within the next couple of years.
“I definitely want to go to America to do some Sprintcar racing over there,” Lachlan affirmed.
“I am talking about getting to America pretty soon.”
The time frame is definitely sooner than later as America awaits in the next exciting chapter of his Sprintcar career.
It's a busy domestic schedule for Lachlan who finished high school last year and is looking to university studies in the future for a course in engineering.
Lachlan is the son of former Australian Super Sedan Champion Jamie McHugh who was such a dominant name in that category for many years. However, after starting his speedway career in a Datsun Junior Sedan, followed by a stint in Mod Lites, Lachlan wanted to take a different career path than his illustrious dad.
Lachlan only ever wanted to drive a 410 V8 Sprintcar.
Their overall appeal far outweighed any other class of oval track racing according to Lachlan.
“What I like about 'em (Sprintcars) is the amount of competition available,” he explained.
“You can race every weekend and there is a big national scene. Many of the big shows, like the Australian Championship and the Classic at Warrnambool, attract over 100 cars. It's that tough competition that I love.”
The Easter Sunday night racing spectacular at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway also will be highlighted with the running of the NSW Wingless Sprintcar Championship.
Race officials have received a very impressive entry list, with Lismore regulars Kevin Willis, Mick Santin, David Eggins, Trent Martin and Robert Mazzer pre-race favourites.
Gates open at 3PM and first race is at 6.
