• Currently undefeated throughout his home state of Tasmania this season, Jock Goodyer continued his winning streak last Saturday night at Latrobe’s Gulf Western & Independent Oils Raceway, winning the Tasmanian Formula 500 Title.

Racking up a whopping eight feature-race wins in his first full season in the class on the trot, Goodyer was undoubtedly a strong chance to succeed in his maiden Tasmanian Title attempt; however, this didn’t stop him from experiencing pre-race nerves, due to running a brand-new car and engine package, which had not yet been tested.

“We weren’t really sure how we were going to go in the Tasmanian Title and we struggled slightly with setup throughout our heat races, but thankfully it all came together for us in the feature race,” commented Goodyer, who placed third and fourth in his two qualifying heat races.

And come together it certainly did. Lining up on the outside of the second row for the 25-lap Tasmanian Title-deciding feature race, the soon to be 17-year-old racer had already taken over second place by the completion of the opening lap, going on to take control of the lead by lap five. From there, Goodyer didn’t put a foot wrong throughout the remainder of the non-stop distance, scoring a dominant win over 10 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

“When I joined the Formula 500s class late last season, I didn’t have too many expectations about what we would achieve, so to have won the Tasmanian Title in my first full season is a great feeling,” enthused Goodyer, who resides in Launceston and who has also recently started racing 410 Sprintcars in addition to Formula 500s.

“We’re definitely gaining more confidence with each lap, so we look forward to seeing what else we can achieve throughout the rest of the season. I also have to say a huge thanks to my crew, my family and our sponsors for making this a possibility. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”

Earlier this season, Goodyer travelled to the mainland to take part in some of the biggest races on the 410 Sprintcar calendar, with only three race meetings with the class under his belt, commencing his campaign in the Kings Challenge at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway, where a challenging run in his heat races meant he was unable to qualify for any of the main races.

Travelling to Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway for the prestigious Grand Annual Classic, the teenager was able to manage his nerves throughout the event, impressively winning a heat race and qualifying into the B main, where he was running inside the top five, before hitting a rut on the track, which resulted in a crash and a subsequent DNF.

Returning to Borderline Speedway for the Australian Championship, Goodyer used the knowledge he had gained in his previous visit to the track to qualify for the D main. Placing second, he then transferred into the C main, but an unfortunate pile up which occurred in front of him in turn one saw him crashed out.

Making his way back to his home state, Goodyer exceeded expectations in the eighth World Series Sprintcar Championship round on home soil at Gulf Western & Independent Oils Raceway, scoring the top honours in qualifying time trials on the Friday night against a formidable field of his more experienced counterparts, before earning enough points to contest the pole shootout and the feature race.

Goodyer would like to thank the following 2017-18 season sponsors for their support: D&B Goodyer Developments, and IM Tiling. He would also like to thank his mum and dad (Belinda and Darren), sisters (Brooke and Abbi), his sister Abbi’s boyfriend and Formula 500 crew chief Louis Maney, Sprintcar crew chief Jackson Davies, his girlfriend Bianca Mostyn, Allan Joyce, Ian McLeod and Scott Ryan.
