• With over 110 competitors to contest almost 400 laps of racing, this Saturday night (May 11) at Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway is shaping as a massive night of competition with drivers flocking from throughout Queensland and interstate to take part. Headlined by round 15 of the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Track Championship in which Gold Coast gun Lachlan McHugh will make his first appearance as the newly crowned Queensland Sprintcar Champion, the show will also feature the 50-lap Jim Holden Classic for Midgets and the annual 50-lap feature race for Wingless Sprints, along with AMCA Nationals and Formula 500 Juniors.

McHugh is in the midst of a terrific run of results at the moment, having won the previous ECL series round here last month before following up with a stunning drive to victory in Toowoomba last weekend to secure his first state championship success. McHugh has more Archerfield feature race wins this season than any other driver in the field and he is only one of several talented young drivers who will hit the track on Saturday night brimming with the confidence, bravery and ability needed to face the challenge that awaits them. Having narrowly missed out on defending his Queensland Championship crown when he finished second behind McHugh in Toowoomba, Mitchell Gee makes his first Archerfield appearance since the Australian Title in January, this time driving for Victorian-based team owner David Dickson, while younger still are the likes of Randy Morgan and Aaron Kelly, both of whom have wasted little time in making their presence felt on the big stage. Morgan already has a podium finish on his resume, while Kelly qualified on the front row of the grid for the Queensland Championship feature race in only his third race meeting.

However, with yet another track championship title all but secured, Australian champ Andrew Scheuerle has been freed from the shackles of points racing and can set forth on a single-minded mission to revisit victory lane for the first time since his historic national title triumph. Likewise, Peter Lack will be fixated on fighting his way to first place in what will be one of his final ever appearances at Archerfield following his announcement that this will be his final season of Sprintcar competition. With a feature win here earlier in the season, Lack would love nothing better than to repeat the feat one more time before hanging up the helmet. In fact, with Luke Oldfield out of action this weekend, Lack finds himself in a three-way fight with Allan Woods and Brent Kratzmann to potentially finish second overall in the track championship, so expect this trio to be in the thick of the action. Add the likes of Bryan Mann, Ben Hilder, Kevin Titman, Darren Jensen and Sydneys Michael Saller into the mix and the scene is set for a penultimate showdown of epic proportion.

Meanwhile, the Midget fraternity will also be out in force for the Jim Holden Classic, a 50-lap test of endurance that will feature three Australian Championship winners in Adam Clarke, Nathan Smee and Kaidon Brown, all of whom hail from New South Wales and will prove a huge hurdle for the locals to overcome in their quest for success. Smee revels in races such as this and last weekend in Sydney he served up a masterful display that saw him start from the rear of the grid after transferring from the B Main and then carving through the field to reach the lead before fading to finish fifth. Driving for local team owner Jack Berry, Clarke has won numerous feature events at Archerfield and across the country, while Brown has enjoyed a very successful season with multiple feature race wins, including the New South Wales Championship just two weeks ago. This trio will face a tough assignment as the field assembled is the strongest so far this season and the 25-car entry list includes Archerfield feature race winners such as Darren Vine, Scott Farmer, Rusty Whittaker and Troy Ware. Having delivered some hard charging displays since making the move in to Midgets, Callum Walker is another who looms as a potential threat, while teenage rookie Bodie Smith will be hoping to bring the form that carried him to a win in the Queensland Compact Speedcar Championship last weekend. The likes of Brad Dawson, Tim Farrell, Chris Singleton and Mitch Brien will also be in the mix, but with the myriad permutations that can potentially play out in a race of this length, anything can happen and it usually does.

Determined not to be upstaged, Wingless Sprints will also be out in force with cars trekking from near and far to contest their 50-lap feature race. With over 30 drivers nominated, half of whom hail from south of the border, the first challenge for all concerned will be securing a place in the feature race field. Of the locals, Brant Chandler, Josh Dreaver, Brad Keiler, Dan Moes, Cody OConnell and the two Robinsons (Andrew and Paul) seem the best chances, while the southern squad includes several serious threats, including Mark Blyton, Jason Davis, Dave Eggins, Michael Butcher and Mason Cattell.

AMCA Nationals have been outstanding this season with consistently strong fields and great racing and they look set to end their season in exactly the same way on Saturday with plenty of potential winners in the line-up. The final round of the Shock Absorber Therapy Track Championship will see Queensland champ Tony Blanch face off against Steve Price, Steve Potts, Nathan Durston, Lee McKinnell, Tim Gamble, Thomas Vickery, Michael Mason and another dozen dirt slingers desperate to end their season on a high.

Gates open at 4.00pm and the packed program, which also features Formula 500 Juniors, gets underway with early racing from 5.00pm. Sprintcar time trials are scheduled for 5.30pm and the main program is set to launch from 6.00pm.
