• Brown Claims Season Opener!
Former Australian Champion Matt Brown has tonight risen back to the top of the Formula 500 tree here in Western Australia as he claimed victory at the Make Smoking History Collie Speedway in Round One of the Fuel Distributors of WA West Coast Series, proudly presented by JC Performance Cylinder Heads.
Brown was in great form all night, claiming two second places in the heats to be equal top points with George Eaton, who claimed a win and a third place in the preliminaries. Brown would then win the final pole shuffle event from Glenn Carstairs to start from pole position in the twenty lap final.
Fifteen cars would line up to take the green in the feature, with just rookie Damien Della unable to make the call. As the race went green Brown would get the jump and lead Carstairs and Eaton while Cody Turacchio and Luke Nardini fought for fourth.
Brown opened up a decent gap on Carstairs in the opening laps as the entire field began to spread out. Todd Broadwood became the first retiree on lap four while back up front Carstairs and Brown were circulating with almost identical laps, the gap not closing nor widening.
Lapped traffic came into play on lap ten, allowing Carstairs to close the gap ever so slightly, but Brown made short work of the slower cars and continued on. Just as they came around to complete the eleventh circulation, Jacob Priest clouted the front straight wall and rolled over to bring out the red lights. Despite the incident, Priest emerged from his damaged machine only frustrated and the race would resume at the halfway point.
Again Brown would pull away as the green lights came on, with Carstairs and Eaton settled in the final podium places as Turacchio came under immense pressure from Luke Nardini for fourth place.
With four to go Turacchio suddenly slowed, heading to the top of the track as the rest of the field drove by, then eventually going infield, handing fourth place to Nardini with Ryan Higgs moving into fifth place.
Back up front though and Carstairs was all of sudden on Brown’s tail tank in the closing stages, looking for a way by. As the white flag flew the duo were side by side, Carstairs moving underneath Brown into one to momentarily take the lead before Brown moved back around the outside, retaking the point. In the final corner Carstairs again looked around the outside of Brown but just couldn’t make the move, Brown winning by just 0.208 seconds ahead of Carstairs while George Eaton drove a solid race to record a fine podium position.

    Minchin on Top
Last night at the Make Smoking History Collie Speedway, Declan Minchin has continued his strong form, winning the feature event held for Junior Formula 500’s as support to the Fuel Distributor of WA West Coast Series and in the process collecting a pile of prizes from event sponsor Collie Tyre and Exhaust!
It was a rough night for the Junior drivers, with Makayla Noakes suffering car issues in the opening two races before clouting the wall heavily in the final heat seeing her take a trip to hospital. Word is that Makayla is sore but ok and from all of us here at Formula 500’s WA Inc, we send her our best wishes.
Back on track though and Declan Minchin won all three preliminary races to start on pole alongside Nash Waldron who had also had his own dramas through the night. Unfortunately these issues would continue as the green flag flew in the feature event, Waldron coasting over the line and then pulling straight to the infield with more mechanical dramas without completing a lap.
This left Minchin out on track all on his lonesome, but he still cut some impressive laps and rounded out what was a solid night for the future star, in the process setting a new six lap record for Junior Formula 500’s at the track.
Despite the opening night teething issues, the Junior Formula 500’s and their crews will be working hard in the next couple of weeks to get the cars ready for the next round back at the Make Smoking History Collie Speedway on the 23rd of November.
A big thanks once again to Collie Speedway for hosting us, as well as to Collie Tyre and Exhaust who came on board to support the Junior Formula 500’s for the night.
We also thanks all those who are supporting the 2019/20 Fuel Distributors of WA West Coast Series, proudly presented by JC Performance Cylinder Heads, Auto One Margaret River, MPS Tree Services, Burson Auto Parts Myaree, Stainless Fastner Supplies, Mark House, Alltorque Engineering, Empire Graphics, BRM Kart Australia, Electrical Trade Union WA, Pirtek Newman, Opal Finance and IGA Three Springs.
