• The Kings Birthday Sunday afternoon saw the final meeting of the 2022/23 South Australian Speedway season held at the Sunline Speedway at Waikerie with Haydon Jolly claiming a surprise victory in the Active Motor Wreckers / National Karate Steve Butcher Street Stock Memorial. In fact, it was Jolly’s first ever A-Main victory and it came in one of the most prestigious Street Stock races on the South Australian calendar.

After shadowing early race leader Keith Moore, who had remained undefeated throughout the heats, Jolly made the race winning move with five laps to go and he went on to claim the win ahead of Moore and Jason Gantz. After being caught up in an opening lap incident Kye Richardson fought back to claim fourth with Grant Harris rounding out the top five. Anthony Buchanan, Andy Maxwell Jr, who put on a great show running the top groove, Phil Watson, Sam Brumfield and Ryan Buchanan completed the top ten in the fifteen-car field.

In addition to Keith Moore the only other heat winner on the day was Mildura racer Wade Fell.

The Speedway Sedans Australia and United Speedway Association supported Modified Sedan Track Championship was all set for a great finale with an exciting line up but unfortunately the field was reduced to only five cars by the mid race distance and it became more of a hot lap session as Peter McCarthy led home a Victorian podium as he defeated Trev Logan and Mark Sheen.

Sheen had an impressive start to the day winning heat one in fine style before a throttle issue in his final heat sent the immaculate #41 hard into the turn 1 wall while out in front. After rebuilding the Falcon for the final Sheen was running a comfortable second before a spin in turn two sent him to the rear, therefore he had to work extremely hard for his podium result.

Local Riverland racer Marty Raams and Strathalbyn’s Shelly Hardy rounded out the finishers. McCarthy (2) and Sheen were the heat winners.

The final round of the United Speedway Association Super Sedan Country Series saw three heats and a 15-lap finale contested with Kym Jury showing his class all day as he was clearly the dominant driver. With two heat wins and a third in the heats Jury started on the pole and he led all 15 laps winning ahead of Neville Nitschke and Victorian Danny Smith. Fourth place went to Adrian Wright, who was having his first drive in a Super Sedan for over four years, while Mildura’s Gary Fallon and Sarah Pope completed the six-car field.

The final round of the Speedway Sedans Australia Junior Sedans Track Championship saw the field split into Top and New Stars before an all in Feature event. In the Top Stars the heats saw Lachlan Brown and Summer Gesell claim a win while Mildura’s Deklan Bolitho won both heats. Bolitho just edged out fellow Victorian Ryan Burns in the opening heat of the day in what was a great duel.

The Final event saw yet another Mildura based racer claim a victory as Diesel Fallon defeated Bolitho, Brown, Burns and Seth Grieg. Unfortunately, Summer Gesell rode out a big tumble in turn two while challenging for the race lead.

The event was also the last for Lucas Warnett who will move up into open competition next season as he enters the Street Stock division.

A small field of Modlites raced for the “Klub Outcast Kup” with Jake Armstrong defeating Brian Chadwick, Jacob Carlier, Jordan Miller and Dylan Richter in the 15-lap final. Earlier in the day the Modlites produced some of the best racing of the day in the heats with Jake Armstrong winning the opening race while Justin Chadwick was victorious in heat 2.
