  • Over the past two weeks Wingless Sprints SA have hosted two club shows with the first at the Whyalla Speedway on October 31 quickly followed by another at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway on November 7.

After winning the season opener in early October Jack McCarthy went into the Whyalla event as a red-hot favourite in the small field and he didn’t disappoint. Throughout the night McCarthy was at his dominant best as he secured two heat wins, and a runner-up finish in the third, along with leading all 20 laps in the Moore Saw Sharpening supported A-Main. But he was chased all the way by rookie Tyson Martin who crossed the line less than a second behind. Hayden Vickers completed the podium with Mick Barker and Nicole Southby completing the top five.

Unfortunately, the field was reduced during hot laps when Normie Moore destroyed the engine in his #12 entry while Jacob Childs also had a mechanical issue at the completion of the opening heat.

With a perfect start to the year McCarthy headed to Murray Bridge last weekend with a hat trick well and truly on the cards, but his streak came to end courtesy of dual Australian Champion Joel Chadwick, who was making his first start of the season in his immaculate #5 Triple X Chassis.

After recording identical heat results, a win and a second, Chadwick and McCarthy shared the front row in the 20-lap finale, with Mount Gambier duo Kirby Hillier and Mitch Broome on the second row.

The opening lap saw Chadwick storm to the front while Broome had an issue on the exit of turn two slowing considerably catching out Anthony Tapley who drove over the right rear. As a result, both drivers fell back through the pack, but they would later recover to finish fifth and seventh respectively.

The Wingless feature had just one yellow light stoppage for a spinning Mick Barker, but produced yet another close finish as Chadwick edged out a fast finishing McCarthy by .272 of second after Chadwick got hung up in lapped traffic. Third went the way of Kirby Hillyer with Hayden Vickers once again fishing towards the front in fourth. Broome recovered to fifth ahead of Tyson Martin, Anthony Tapley, Brent Fox, Darryl Sloan and rookie Jesse Alexander.

Brad Evans, Jacob Childs, Ben Cartwright, Nicole Southby, Sharni Pitcher, Mick Barker and Tamika Pitcher completed the 17-car field that took the green flag.

Hayden Vickers and Kirby Hiller joined McCarthy and Chadwick as heat winners.

Heat 4 would see the red light come on for Harley Alexander, who was having his first ever start, after he inverted his green #20 J&J in the middle of turns 1 and 2.

The next Wingless Sprints SA Club Show will be at the Borderline Speedway, Mount Gambier on November 28, 2020. Last start winner Joel Chadwick, local hot shot Mitch Broome, Tyson Martin and Hayden Vickers are among the early entries.
