• Series and track organisers are tremendously pleased with the response for the second round of the VMPA Australian Multiskill Modified Series at Western Speedway, Hamilton this Saturday attracting a field of 33 entries from as far as Mildura and Rosedale.

Last year series winner Daryl Logue from Rosedale will again be piloting his fast XF Falcon hoping to well and truly cement his stamp on this class as he enters his second season in Modified Sedans. Series second placegetter Peter “Spider” McCarthy will be swapping the steering wheel for the spanners this season as he crews for his son Wayde who will be racing the immaculately presented VE Commodore from Mildura.

Third placegetter in the series was Russell Bent from Nyora having already shown great form at Avalon this year in his new immaculate and very tough FG Falcon.

Mildura drivers will be presenting themselves in force at this race meeting already having had a shakedown last weekend at their home track, former Australian Champion David Smith once again in his BA Falcon, series benefactor Dave Dolic in an AU Falcon and Daniel Drewett in an XF Falcon making the trek down south.

Perennial favourite Mark Carlin in the South Burnett Falcon is sure to be a favourite for the win in front of his former hometown crowd having grown up in Hamilton in his early years.

For most of the 33 entries Hamilton will be their first hit out for the season after the first round of the Victorian Modified Production Series was cancelled at Redline Raceway, Buninyong after rain rendered the grounds unserviceable for the night. A handful of drivers who have managed to have a run prior to this event include Brenton Mills and Ross Madden, both who have run favourably at Avalon Raceway early in the season along with Tim Williams in his new BA Falcon.

Redline’s Darren Cockerill will be running the Bryan Hart VZ Commodore after some pleasing practice laps between his son Nick and himself last weekend.

Other entries include local driver Kellie Atkins, Leigh Bourke in his TE Cortina, father and son Billy and Chris Rieck driving Commodores, Zac Swanson in a new VS Commodore, another father and son team in Russell and Nick Hill with Russell driving the VY Monaro and Nick in the earlier VS Commodore.

Young guns and former Junior competitors include Brody Chrystie, Daniel Simpson, Ty Galley and former Australian Junior Champion Chris Hayden who will all be hoping to knock a few old dogs off their turf as they hone and develop their skills in the senior division.

Other entries include Michael Hetherington from Redline, Nathan Ehms from Swan Hill, Ben Moon from Alexandra, Neil Watson in the unusual looking VS Statesman and veteran racer Garry Ainley in his EF Falcon.

Fast contenders also include Russell Felsovary from Nyora, Gavin Catley from Warrnambool, young Jayde Aarts from Rosedale, Production Sedan racer Stephen Laidlaw, Graham West in his fast LJ Torana and Rodney Burr from Nyora in his AU Falcon.

Doubtless to say that the action will be fast and furious and whoever wins the final after the three rounds of heats will no doubt have worked very hard to get there. This is only the start of the season for this class and as yet their points sheet is an empty slate and there are many wanting to secure a good start in the coveted Victorian VMPA Australian Multiskill Series.

Racing starts at 5 pm with other classes including SRA Sprintcars boasting two American drivers and the Australian Wingless sprints. Definitely a meeting worth going to with something there for everybody.
