• Emotions ran high for Green Brothers Racing following a brilliant performance to claim the 2014 NSW Sprintcar Championship at Sydney Speedway last Saturday night.
Chasing his first victory in an event he had finished second on four occasions over the past decade, Trevor Green finally saluted the judge in the Natrad S#4 Maxim, ahead of Kraig Kinser and Ian Louden to take the 56th NSW crown.
The relief of the achievement after so many misses was coupled with some emotion as Green became aware he was just the second SA driver – and the first since the late Bill Wigzell in 1976 – to win the title.
“I felt totally honored to win the same title as one of my childhood racing heroes, the great ‘Wizard’ Billy Wigzell,” Green outlined post-race.
“I also felt somewhat humbled to be mentioned in the same breath as such a legend.
“Funny, but it is a similar experience to how I felt in 1997 when I won the Grand Annual Classic at Warrnambool, joining Bill and ‘Zeke’ Agars as the only SA drivers to have won the event at that time.
“I am a proud South Australian, so to follow in the footsteps of the deeds of our past champions on the national scene is as I said, pretty humbling and an honor.”
Coming into the NSW title event in consistent form, Green timed fourth quickest, before claiming second place in his heat race from starting sixth on the grid.
He again claimed second spot in the dash from the third row on the grid, qualifying for a start in the title chase from position two.
The Two Wells resident moved into an early lead ahead of US rival Dale Blaney, only to be passed by Kraig Kinser in lapped traffic, before a red light came on after Danny Smith flipped in the main straight.
At the restart Green was relegated to fourth place by Steve Kinser and Louden before an intense battle developed between the leading quintet of drivers.
Another mid race caution had Green from the outside row of the double file restart, and while dropping back as far as sixth, the SA pilot determinedly pulled back up the pecking order.
Green worked into third spot before moving up another place with the withdrawal of Steve Kinser.
With the car feeling good, Green eventually reeled in Kraig Kinser and then over the closing 10 laps created a lead by the length of the straight before taking the chequered flag for a memorable win.
Green will now look to continue his winning ways when he contests the Scott Darley Memorial event at Sydney Speedway this Friday and Saturday night before heading south to be among the record entries for the 2014 Classic at Warrnambool.

Trevor Green would like to acknowledge the continuing support of Natrad Radiators and Auto Air, Freightmaster Semi-Trailers, Vins Mini Buses, Logical Property Services, Protec, Steve Wicks and Son, Gilbert Event Management, Fuchs Lubricants, SA Motorcycles, Slapps Jap Imports, Harrop Engineering, Green Welding, Maxwill Racing Engines, Weld Wheels, Butler Built and Pinnacle Graffix.
