  • After a short break from the South Australian dirt ovals, the past two weekends saw some great Wingless Sprint action with two events being run back to back at the Murray Machining and Sheds Speedway at Murray Bridge. On his return home to South Australia newly crowned Australian Champion, Joel Chadwick, continued his domination of the events at Murray Bridge as he was victorious on March 25 while Spencer “Ironman” Taylor flexed his muscles last Saturday night to claim the win in front of a healthy crowd at the “Big Kids Night Out”.

Going into last Saturday’s 25 lap final Taylor and William Caruso shared the front row for the final and they would both go on to have their turn at the front but it would be Taylor who would eventually go on to record the win. Caruso would hold onto second with the result being well deserved after what has been a torrid season for the driver of the immaculate #10. Anthony Tapley would finish third for the second meeting a row with Darryl Sloan, Brett Ireland, Aaron Doe, Renee Pestka, David Cuppleditch, Lucy Evans and Trent Gravestock completing the top 10 in the 15-car field.

The event would prove to be a tough one for Dan Evans, who was having one of his rare Wingless Sprint starts for the season, after spinning on the opening lap he would be sent to the rear of the field only to spin again in turn three where he was collected by Casey Vanderstelt.

Earlier the heat races, that were run without any real incident, were secured by Darryl Sloan, William Caruso and Anthony Tapley.

The week prior at Murray Bridge (March 25) Joel Chadwick returned to race in his home state for the first time since his Australian Championship victory and he made his local debut as the National Champ a memorable one as he survived a spirited challenge from Joel Heinrich to win the 20-lap final. Third place went to Anthony Tapley ahead of Brett Ireland and Dale Gesell. Just outside the top five was Michael Spoljaric while Spencer Taylor, William Caruso, Bronson Mauro, David Cuppleditch and Darryl Sloan completed the finishers.

Earlier the heat winners were Gesell, Spencer Taylor and Chadwick while Renee Pestka rode out a big roll over in heat 1 after contact with Greg Cunningham in turn 1 of the opening lap.

In addition to Joel Chadwick winning the Australian Championship in Tasmania he also had a second place result in the Tasmanian State Title which was held two weeks later at the same venue. Wingless Sprints SA would also like to congratulate Robert Heard for his runner-up result in the Victorian Title at Hamilton on the weekend.

With no events scheduled for this weekend the local Wingless Sprint competitors will have a week off before hitting the road for three consecutive nights of racing with the 2017 Easter Trail starting at the Timmis Speedway at Mildura on Easter Friday. The series will then head into South Australia with night 2 at the Riverland Speedway at Renmark on Saturday before the Grand Final is held in conjunction with the “Easter Thrillerama” at Adelaide Motorsport Park on Sunday night.
