  • Whyalla racer Angelo Karoussis regained his crown as the Formula 500 “King of the Bridge” as won the title for a third time on Saturday night (December 15) at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway. After trailing early race leader Liam Williams, a late race caution gave Karoussis the chance to pounce with the leading duo trading passes at either end of the race track before Karoussis opened a 2.7 second lead to defeat Williams and Patrick Merrett.

“During the caution I could see that Liam’s right rear looked a bit soft, so I thought there may be an issue there. I knew I had to make a move quickly and I made it stick. I may have crowded him a little, but Liam and I always race hard but fair, I’m sure he would do the same thing if he was going for the win too” commented the “King” after the race.

For Williams it was yet another runner-up result in the event at the track that he rates as his favourite.

Patrick Merrett was clearly the best of the rest all night and his third placing was a fitting result, but fourth placed Dylan Willsher wasn’t happy with the result stating that he simply wasn’t fast enough and that he has a lot of work to do before he would be contending for race wins.

Fifth place went to Brad Stell, who started deep in the field after dropping a heat, while Victorian youngster Angus Hollis, Ross Miller, who was impressive all night and made the top 6 dash, Brendan Zadow, Corey Jones and Dean Cottrell completed the top 10.

Three heats were conducted earlier with Willsher, Karoussis and Williams the victors while Williams defeated Karoussis, Willsher, Merrett, Miller and Hollis in the top 6 dash.

The second main event of the night was Round 2 of the State Wingless Sprint Series with Australian Champion Joel Chadwick leaving his run late as he only led the final two laps on his way to a dramatic feature race win. After running third for most of the race he made a breathtaking outside pass on Joel Heinrich and Victorian Daniel Storer to go from third to first.

Storer would finish second in the late race shuffle with Heinrich finishing third. Jack McCarthy was exciting to watch all night as he finished fourth with Anthony Tapley, Brad Evans, Darryl Sloan, Ben Harris, Jay Brown and Melissa McMillan completing the top 10.

The all action program also included AMCA Nationals, Street Stocks, Junior Sedans and Modlites with the feature events providing some great racing.

Lochie Gywnne got the better of Jason Robinson by less than half a second in the 15 lap AMCA National A-Main while veteran Carey Weston produced a great drive in his Ford Falcon to edge out Neville Nitschke and Cade Cox in a drama filled Street Stock feature.

There was no stopping Drew Flatman in the Junior Sedan finale as he led home a pair of Mitsubishi Lancer’s in the hands of Chelsea Gwynne and Sharni Pitcher. In what was probably one of the best features of the night Brook Alexander charged to victory in the Modlites final with Michael Cowland, Chris Ferguson, Graham Knuckey and Danny Prade completing the top 5.

The next event at the Murray Machining and Sheds Speedway will be on Boxing Day (December 26) with the opening round of the 2018/19 World Series Sprintcars featuring 10 contracted drivers, including the likes of Kerry Madsen, James McFadden, Rusty Hickman and Lachlan McHugh, as they take on the local “South Aussie Posse” and several other interstate stars.
