• Michael Holmes is regarded as one of Western Australia’s leading Late Model racers and a cameo return to the AMCA National class in last Saturday night’s Western Australian Title at Esperance Speedway resulted in a win.

Guest driving for Greg and Peta Horan for the third occasion this season, Holmes was in great form throughout the night by winning two out of the three heat races and by virtue that earned him the pole position start for the feature race.

In the 30-lap feature race, Holmes, who prior to stepping into Late Models a decade ago competed in AMCA Nationals and actually won his maiden Western Australian Title in the 2006-07 season at Geraldton City Speedway, powered to the lead from the outset and was never headed for the remainder of the distance.

Despite there being a handful of stoppages during the closing stages of the feature race, it wasn’t enough to deny Holmes of a comfortable win.

Joining Holmes on the podium was team-mate Greg Horan in second, two-time Western Australian Title holder David Boyes in third and Stephen Wright in fourth.

One of the hard-luck stories from the feature race was without a doubt Murray Parsons Jnr. Parsons had qualified on the outside of the front row in the feature race alongside Holmes. In the opening stages, Parsons Jnr chased after Holmes aggressively but was unable to take control of the lead. In the middle stages, Parsons Jnr’s run came to a premature end, due to his radiator expiring in spectacular fashion between turns one and two.

Parsons Jnr was joined on the infield by defending Western Australian Champion Sean Mazzuchelli, who had two spins in the closing stages of the feature race and was therefore disqualified due to the two-stoppage rule. Another driver to endure a tough run was Rob Trenaman, as he was unable to take his place in the feature-race field due to a mechanical issue suffered during the formation laps.

The heat races saw Holmes pick up two wins and the other win went the way of Boyes.

The next major AMCA Nationals event is going to be the Victorian Title at Ballarat’s Redline Raceway on the Saturday night of March 21.
